Walking with Jesus – Reflections from Week 1

Walking with Jesus – Reflections from Week 1

Posted on 9 Dec 2020

You’ve walked, we’ve listened (and pray God has as well!), here are some of the reflections from our first week of #kkmcwwj

It was our 2nd outing after the “circuit breaker.” But this time we boldly challenged the highest mountain in town. Divided into two groups, we hiked the hill according to the trails that were nicely placed in the wood. Though we took nearly two hours to complete the journey, the hike was pleasant and fun as we took time to appreciate the beauty of God’s creation and fellowship with one another. Among the uphill climb and downhill steps, the descending set was the hardest among the two. It reminded me of Job in the Bible when he fell from the summit into the valley of the shadow of death. And yet “In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.” (Job 2:10b). It is my prayer for the Life Group that in whatever stage of life, we must not lose sight of God.

We completed the outing “walking with Jesus” with a good brunch at the nearby food centre. To God be the glory.

While hiking and being surrounded by many trees, the verse Psalms 1:3 came to my mind, “That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither – whatever they do prospers“. This verse is a reminder that if we anchor ourselves in God’s word, He will nourish us, enabling us to grow in spirit. And at the right time, we will flourish in all that we do.

Col 3:23 – Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters… The hiking of the nature park reminded me that the work of God’s hands were all around us for us to appreciate, a good reminder that we too are the product of His work because of His love. The verse comes to mind amidst the daily busy-ness of work and serves to remind even in work, we should have the mindset to work for God and give only our best to Him.

“You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.” Psalms 55:12

On 14th Nov 2020, our life group went hiking at Bukit Timah Hill.  My husband and I are regular hikers there before the Covid-19 pandemic. But hiking with our Life Group members made the trials easier, more fun and enjoyable.

We started off with a word of prayer n broke into two groups as we prayer walk through the hill with a joyful spirit. Occasionally we stopped for water break and admired the nature scenery around us. Since it was a public holiday, the hill was packed with many hikers like us. I wondered what would Jesus do if He was there. I supposed He would  do the same when he saw the crowds, he had compassion on the people, started teaching and even fed them. But I knew Jesus was in the midst of us through His creation, we had the best companion; we had the best symphony in the whole entire world as the hill, chirping of the birds and laughter of the people sang to us. Of course the surrounding trees as the audiences to applaud of His creations. Indeed Jesus started to teach us through His creation that He is the Lord of heaven and earth, and all things are created by Him.

In the midst of the pandemic, He is still in control. He wants us to trust and obey Him at ALL times, in good times as well as in bad times.

Our walk ended with prayers n a scrumptious brunch at Bukit Timah Food Centre.  We were so hungry that we finished all the food, leaving nothing to ‘dabao’ home.

We were raring to go on our walk – and it rained. Yet, we found that quiet peace in our hearts knowing that God is with us when we wait in silence under our umbrellas at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

May the LORD answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you. Psalm 20:1

After hiking in the nature park, my body was unwell. Reflecting on psalm 20:1, I believe that whatever happens, there may not be an absolute answer and I may not even understand.

But it’s His unique plan for me, at His right timing.

Thankful to God for His provision all this time, and receiving His wisdom for seeking medical treatment referred by the angel He sent. He knows perfectly I need a break, an official break (MC) from work.

In His grace & protection, trust that I can continue to be a blessing to others through Him, to glory Him. Without God, I know I can’t.

As a lifegroup, we spent the early morning looking for an adventure at Dairy Farm Nature Park which shares the same area as Bukit Timah Hill. I am not a morning person, so waking up early on a Saturday morning and travelling to the other end of the island was quite a challenge. This coming off the back of one of many busy and draining weeks at work. I remained pretty silent throughout the hike, trying to conserve my energy so as to have enough strength to keep climbing up and down. I thought to myself I must have been crazy to be hiking with so little in the tank. The desperate search to squeeze out every ounce of strength in me to keep going reminded me of how the Lord sustains us everyday and that his mercies are new every morning. Even though I was tired and the weight of a long week was weighing upon me, I could walk easier knowing that with a brand new morning, comes new hope because the Lord is faithful. Just like that, after 2 hours of walking, we completed the hike and rounded off the calorie burning activity with good fuel at Bukit Timah Food Centre. Thank God to be able to enjoy fellowship and a good workout with brothers and sisters in Christ.
